celebrating Greece's independence day

celebrating Greece's independence day

singing our national anthem

On the 25th of last month we celebrated our country’s independence from the Turkish occupation of 400 years. The 25th of March every year is a national holiday here and on the day before we have a celebration at school. We all get together at our school’s concert hall and we read texts, recite poems and sing songs about our independence day. You can hear our national anthem if click on this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymn_to_Liberty. On our independence day we first go to church and then we have a big school parade. Do you have such parades in your country?

We wish you all a very, very Happy Easter! We’re on holidays now and we’ll be back with more news on the 27th of April 2009. Keep well and enjoy your Easter vacation.

We wish we had Carnival all year round!!! It’s so much fun and we want to share it with you!!!

Joanna Photakia, Grade 1, 2nd Junior High School of Paralia.

Last Friday all the High School kids saw a demonstration about how we can protect ourselves in case of fire and earthquake. Two fire fighters talked to us about it for one hour.

That was a really interesting demonstration and I really liked it. All the children asked many questions about fire or earthquake.

That was an excellent experience for me and all my classmates and I really enjoyed it!!!!!

Carnival 2009

In my country we have a festival that is so special and we call it ‘Carnival’. We celebrate it at the end of February until the beginning of March.

All people choose one group with beautiful costumes and when the time comes young people and children dance in the streets. Some people drink a lot and do bad things and that’s very sad!

Also after Carnival we have a nice day, Clean Monday, when we fast, eg: we don’t eat meat, cheese or drink milk and we fly kites. Some people have a competition for the most beautiful kite.

That’s the best festival in my country. Carnival is exciting!!!!!!
